I Don't Notice Myself Grinding My Teeth. Could I Still Have Bruxism?
Yes, it's entirely possible that you have bruxism. This is a complex condition not only because it can cause symptoms like headaches that aren't typically associated with oral health, but also because it's an involuntary action.
For many patients, their teeth grinding occurs at night while they sleep. Others are so used to it that they do not even realize when they are clenching their teeth.
Our oral surgeons can examine your teeth to determine if they have been affected by bruxism, and recommend the right treatment to relieve symptoms affecting your jaw and teeth.
I Already Wear a Retainer. Do I Really Need a Mouthguard?
While your retainer may cover your teeth, it doesn't do the work of a mouthguard.
It simply isn't built to withstand the grinding, clenching, and wear created by bruxism.
In fact, if you wear a retainer and experience teeth grinding, you may have already noticed significant wear and tear on your orthodontic device.
Even worse, you may have seen signs of damage to your teeth, which can be frustrating after years of dedication to your orthodontic care and dental health.
We can recommend a treatment plan that harmonizes with your orthodontic therapy but also addresses your bruxism. In some cases, we may recommend simply alternating nights, wearing your retainer one evening and then your mouthguard the next.
How Will Bruxism Affect My Dental Restorations?
Just as grinding can impact your jaw muscles and natural teeth, it can also have an effect on your dental restorations.
Crowns and veneers may wear down over time due to the effects of clenching or grinding. They may chip or crack as well.
Teeth grinding can also lead to gum recession, which can make your restorations look less natural and ultimately jeopardize the health of your natural teeth.
Unfortunately, teeth grinding may make it necessary to replace your dental restorations sooner than you expected.
There is a way you can avoid the stress and high cost of replacing dental restorations: receiving bruxism treatment at one of our three Tampa-area offices.
A custom mouth guard will be much more affordable than treating damaged natural teeth and restorations.
Meanwhile, it can help you escape the daily pain, grinding, and other symptoms of bruxism.
Is Bruxism the Same Thing as TMJ?
TMJ is a condition characterized by inflammation of the jaw joints, often caused by an imbalanced bite. While bruxism and TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder do share several symptoms, like teeth grinding, worn teeth, and headaches, they are ultimately two different conditions.
TMJ problems may be a cause of bruxism, and bruxism can lead to TMJ. For example, you may have a misaligned bite that is prompting you to unconsciously shift your jaw in search of a balanced position. In this case, TMJ would be causing you to grind your teeth. Or, you may be grinding your teeth to a degree that is causing inflammation of the jaw joints, which is an example of bruxism leading to TMJ.
Ultimately, you will need to visit Dr. Edwards and Dr. Backeris to determine what is causing your condition and how to address it.
