Bone Grafting

After you lose a tooth, your jawbone can begin to shrink, weaken, and recede. This can affect your appearance and your restoration options.

At Advanced Oral Surgery of Tampa, our oral surgeons perform bone grafting to help patients qualify for dental implants.

Why do we recommend bone grafts to so many patients at our practice serving greater Tampa, FL?

The Benefits of Bone Grafting

Strengthen Your Jaw

A jaw that recedes due to tooth loss is weaker, making it more difficult to bite into your favorite foods and more vulnerable to fractures. Restoring bone density with a graft can restore your jaw's natural strength.

Maintain Your Appearance

As the jawbone atrophies, it affects your facial features, resulting in a sunken, aged appearance. A bone graft can maintain the integrity of your jaw line so you look as healthy and youthful as possible.

Qualify for Implants

Dental implants are the best option for restoring missing teeth, but implants require a sufficient amount of bone in the jaw. If you are not ready for dental implants because your jawbone has atrophied, a bone graft procedure can restore your candidacy.

Why Are Bone Grafts Necessary?

Our jaws maintain their strength, density, and shape because of regular stimulation from tooth roots. When a tooth is lost, the jawbone loses that stimulation, which causes it to atrophy at the location of the missing tooth. An atrophied bone is weaker, more fragile, and unable to support prosthetics like dental implants.

Dental bone grafting counteracts this negative consequence of tooth loss by surgically placing natural or synthetic materials to initiate the growth of new bone. Once the bone has naturally integrated with the graft, patients are able to restore their smiles with dental implants.

Anyone who feels uneasy going to an Oral Surgeon, look no further I felt so safe, comfortable and the team was so eager to answer any questions. I had my two kids take out their teeth and I had a tooth extraction and bone graft, which everything worked out. Most importantly they go over all the costs and work with the insurance, there are no surprises as to what is expected from you cost. This place is very pleasant, organized and they put their patients first. Thank you Advanced Oral Surgery Team for making my experience safe and great!!

When Is Bone Grafting Performed?

At Advanced Oral Surgery of Tampa, the most common times for our oral surgeons to perform bone grafting are:

Bone graft

After Tooth Extraction

How Are Bone Grafts Placed? A Treatment Timeline

While bone grafts can be implemented in a variety of dental treatment plans, we most often conduct bone grafting to prepare patients for dental implant surgery. Not all implant patients require bone grafts. Whether or not you will require a grafting procedure can be determined by one of our oral surgeons in a dental implant consultation.

For patients who do require bone grafting, the extent of the procedure is determined by the health of their existing bone, the number of missing teeth, and other factors. However, most patients can expect the grafting procedure to follow several steps:

Imaging & Planning

Before conducting any surgery, our doctors take high-quality scans of patients' jaws and bites using the latest imaging technology. Our cone beam CT scanner and other machines produce highly precise images without large amounts of radiation or uncomfortable dental putty. Our doctors use these scans to digitally plan the procedure for incredibly accurate results.

Sedation

To promote patient comfort, we make dental sedation available during all procedures. Every member of our team is trained to administer anesthesia, and we can provide sedation to your comfort level. Bone graft procedures can be completed under twilight sedation or general anesthesia.

Graft Placement

After you are sedated, your surgeon will make an incision in your gums and precisely place the graft into the recessed bone. Finally, the doctor will close the incision with sutures.

Healing

After your bone graft surgery, you can return home to begin the healing process. It typically takes about three months for new bone to form around the graft. Once your bone has healed, we will be able to schedule you for dental implant surgery.

I am expressing my appreciation to Dr. Jason Edwards, (Advanced Oral Surgery), for the excellent and compasionate care that he, Kelly, Cory and team have afforded me during a difficult time. Caution, be careful biting into thick chocolate bars. I destroyed a bridge and tooth, which led to a root canal, tooth extration and bone reconstruction (graft). Dr. Edwards lifted the room, bringing sunshine as he entered. His attention to detail and making sure you are "OK" through the entire procedure. Dr. Edwards numbing technique helped immencely, and his conversation with team, in a home like casual atmosphere took my mind off the procedure. They are a caring team lead by an amazing Surgeon. Have you ever left a dentists office and thought "I'll miss this place"? I already DO! Thank you Dr. Jason Edwards for your excellent care.

Why Dental Implants?

At Advanced Oral Surgery of Tampa, dental implant surgery is one of our most regularly performed procedures. We produce great results with implants and encourage all patients with tooth loss to consider this life-changing solution.

A dental implant is a titanium rod that acts as a prosthetic tooth root. Titanium is biocompatible and naturally fuses with the jawbone or bone graft, so they are just as secure and powerful as natural roots. After the implants are securely fused, our team or a dentist can provide natural-looking crowns, bridges, or dentures to seamlessly fill in the gaps in your smile.

Dental implants are such a great option because they are durable, they keep the jaw strong, and they can last a lifetime. If you think implants could make a difference in your life, we encourage you to contact our office in Valrico, Land O'Lakes, or South Tampa, FL, today.
